First Day of School

Tiny little hand in mine
Confident steps so carefree
Looking about him with eyes that shine
Dancing by my side with glee.

Brightly colored poster on the walls.
Distracted mothers with their young
Create an atmosphere in these halls
A mixture of nerves and fun

A new backpack on scrawny shoulders
Filled with sundry school supplies
Seems ready to make him topple over
I wanted to get one half that size.

Full of big dreams and little schemes
My little boy pulls away
The past four years have flown, it seems
Independence starts today.
