Big Man McDonald
by Jim

An ode to Big Mac - now he was a lad,
Big friendly giant and just slightly mad.
He towered above you but never looked down,
Always was smiling, never a frown.
The happiest man you ever could meet,
Six foot seven, size twelve feet.

Well I see you can guess that he was a big bloke,
Happy as Larry from the moment he woke.
The courage of a lion and chivalrous to boot,
Told jokes like a docker, the man was a hoot.

Fought to protect, rescue and right,
Countries and nations from peril and plight.
Went to the line to save others from woe,
Never questioned why, always ready to go.

Don’t get it wrong, he signed on the line,
He took the oath and served his time,
With diligence and pride, he did his job,
Got paid very well, saved a few bob.

He paid the price nobody wants to pay,
I wonder sometimes is there any other way.
To defend and protect without question or thought,
Bad times and nightmares come back to haunt.
Times and decisions that have been made,
Good ones, bad ones, prices paid.

Churchill gave the speech, so many for so few,
Things are done, if only you knew.
Sleep safe in your beds, but spare a thought
for the unnamed men who’s lives are wrought,
with danger and trouble, hard times and bad.
Have a dram and think but please don’t be sad.

Gone but not forgotten – 08 Nov 04.
