Harald was the son of Canute and his mistress Elfgifu. After the death of his father, he became regent of England. His half-brother Hardicanute was the rightful King of England but was also the King of Denmark and was away when England fell to him. Harald was officialy made king in his brother's absence and ruled until his death in 1040. Hardicanute had been ready to invade England to take back his crown when his brother died.
