Ethelred
866-871
House of Wessex
Third son of Ethelwulf, Ethelred succeeded his brother Ethelbert
and couldn't control the Danish raids that had been increasing during
his brother's reign. He managed to quosh a Danish invasion at the
Battle of Reading in 871 but lost his life in the Battle of Merton
in the same year.
He had two sons by his wife Wulfrida, the eldest named Ethelwald.
He was succeeded by his brother Alfred the great.
