Edgar
959-975
House of Wessex
Edgar, youngest son of Edmund I, succeeded his brother Eadwig.
In 957 Edgar was given Mercia and Northumbria to rule and he brought
Dunstan out of exile, appointing him Bishop of Worcester. When Eadwig
died, Edgar appointed Dunstan Archbishop of Cantebury and began
the establishment of Benedictine monastaries throughout England.
He married Ethelflaed Eneda in 960 and had a son named Edward before
her death in 963. His second wife Aelfthrith became the first to
be crowned Queen of England at Edgar's late coronation of 973.
Edgar died on 8th July 975 and was succeeded by his son Edward.
