Canute
[Cnut, Knut Sveinsson]
1016-35
Danish Line

Canute became king of all England when Edmund II died. His rivals were executed, exiled or fled abroad. Canute had a son, harald Harefoot with his mistress and then married Edmund II's widow, Emma of Normandy. They also had a son, Hardicanute who he named his heir. Canute was paid the last Dangeld ever to be paid, a sum of 82,500 pounds.

The legend of how Canute commanded the waves to go back is perhaps what this Danish king of England is best remembered for. This legend has it that, weary of flatter from his courtiers he attempted to disprove the claim that he could stop the waves, commanding obedience from the sea. He stood before the sea at Southhampton and commanded the waves to stop.

Canute was succeeded by his son Harald.
